Insulator, Firewall… Mushrooms?

Monday, May 11th, 2009

Homeowners looking for a more responsible way to keep their houses cool in the summer and warm in the winter may soon have a viable alternative to that good old pink fiberglass insulation so many of us have suffered through installing.

How Many Products were Greenwashed in 2008?

Friday, May 8th, 2009

When I first read this question, posed by environmental marketing agency TerraChoice, the initial knee-jerk response that popped into my head was something along the lines of “too many”.

Design is the Problem

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

Nathan Sherdoff’s new book “Design is the Problem” is being heralded as a must read for designers in all disciplines, as well as businesspeople and consumers at large. The subtext, “the future of design must be sustainable” comes not from a trend-driven greenster or hippie at heart, but rather from a logical, sensible approach to design.

The site also features a section called the GreenSaver, a directory of weekly discounts offered on environmentally conscious goods and services. Definitely worth checking out.

April Food Day

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

As many of you are probably aware, there is a drive underway this month encouraging people to unite and donate to organizations fighting hunger at home. April Food Day is asking all those who write blogs and those who read them to donate $1.00 in April.

Most of us could probably dig one dollar out from under the sofa cushions, yet it equates to ten pounds of food, or seven full meals. Of course, people are encouraged to donate any amount. Please help us fight hunger.

Good Enough to Eat?

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009

Consumers have a lot on their plate these days (if you’ll forgive the pun). There are a lot of factors to consider when making choices about the things we buy, and about the people we buy them from.

Was a product made by children in sweatshops overseas? Was a rainforest clearcut so I could buy it? Does the company test on animals? Will the product fall apart in a year? Were the farmers paid a fair wage for this coffee? Will a product give me cancer? Is it ethical?

Asking these questions is just part of being a vigilant and responsible consumer.

Expanding the Empire… Sort of

Friday, March 20th, 2009

For my wife, running a business is old news. For me, it’s complete alien territory. I’d rather spend all day in the workshop, but I’m learning more about the administrative side of things as we run along. I took a stab at writing a press release for the official company launch, and we sent it out via PRweb.

Then, crazy things happened.

The Recycling Debate

Monday, March 16th, 2009

Along with the green movement has come a skeptical, reactionary and at times self-serving anti-movement movement (for lack of a better term). On the one hand, we should be thankful that there are people ensuring that anyone standing to profit from green claims are held accountable for their actions (or lack thereof). On the other, the profusion of untested and unvalidated theories being passed around as fact has created a climate of confusion for those of us who just want to do the right thing.

Recently, I had a discussion with someone who was convinced that recycling actually causes more pollution than manufacturing goods from virgin materials. I wasn’t sure. Most of us just trust that the trucks hauling away our carefully washed and sorted recyclables are taking them to a better place than the trucks that carry away our garbage.

Carbon Offsets vs Action - What Do You Think?

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

One of the core operating principles at SIDD centers around sustainability and responsible business practice. Now, we know it’s trendy to ‘go green’, but honestly, how many companies actually do it? It’s a noble cause, absolutely, but a coat of nasty green paint hardly qualifies.
